The Mustang made its first public appearance at a track just over a month after its introduction on April 17, as pace car for 1964 Indianapolis 500.
The same year, Mustangs made the first of many notable successes in competition, winning first and second in the class in the Tour de France rally international. In late 1964, Ford hired Holman & Moody to prepare ten 427-powered Mustangs to contest (the National Hot Rod Association NHRA) A / Factory Experimental class in the 1965 drag racing season. Five of these special Mustangs made their debut in the competition at the 1965 NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified in the Factory Stock Eliminator class.
